Movie review: No surprises in controversial "The Interview"

We live in interesting times.  Despite being relatively racy and dark in subject matter for a mainstream comedy, “The Interview” might have disappeared into the annals of history if not for North Korea blasting the Sony Entertainment Network with enough cyberpunk hacking attacks to make the corporation pull the film from theaters.

New regent choices show lack of diversity

Editor, I think it’s just great that there will be three more white males on UNM’s Board of Regents. That will really help diversify this group so that it will better reflect New Mexico’s population. Way to go, Governor Martinez.

Low oil prices cause disaster to budget

The recent drop in international oil prices is threatening to limit the funding UNM receives from the state, University officials warned during Friday’s Board of Regents meeting. When President Bob Frank gave his administrative report to the Regents, he noted that the price of oil per barrel dropped from $92 in August to $49. This is significantly lower than prices were in December at $66 per barrel, when Frank projected a $2.8 million budget deficit for UNM, he said.

Exercising freedom of speech makes it meaningful

Editor, Where does good-natured humor leave off and barbed insult begin? Once more we have killings by Muslims, this time in France. This was at the offices of magazine Charlie Hebdo. It turns out the shooters were offended by the all that satire, caricature and lampooning of Islam and its prophet.

Lobos take first loss in MW slate

Saying Tuesday’s game between New Mexico and San Diego State was a defensive affair would be an understatement. Suffocating defense by the Aztecs downed a streaking Lobo team in the third game of conference play, 56-42. UNM (10-5, 2-1 Mountain West) dropped its first conference game of the season to SDSU 56-42. The Lobos couldn’t find an answer to a smothering Aztecs defense.

Women's basketball: Team leader has her own pace on, off court

New Mexico guard Chirrisse Bryce Owens has never bowed to the standards of anyone else, and that mentality provided the junior starter with a unique leadership role on and off the court. At a young age, Owens said, she decided she was going to have her own style. Owens was named after her mother, but the only child out of DeSoto, Texas, said she was not a fan of that name and began going by Bryce. Chirrisse and Howard Owens acknowledged their daughter’s desire, so they began to call her Bryce. After earning McDonald’s High School All-American recognition, Owens moved into a major role on the UNM women’s basketball program and was named a starter in her freshman campaign for the Lobos.
