Scorers need to capitalize on chances

Long stockings couldn’t cover up the UNM women’s soccer team’s Achilles’ heel Friday. The Lobos’ weakness — an inability to capitalize on offensive opportunities — had gone unexposed until Northern Arizona University entered the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lumberjacks became the second team this season to score twice on the Lobos — and the first to hand them a loss, 2-1. On paper, UNM held the advantage in nearly every category against NAU.

Locksley's 'remodeling' project needs revision

Boy oh boy — this year’s version of the UNM football team makes the lottery seem predictable. Throw out little things like logic. Discard sensibility. And statistical trends? Well, those are irrelevant. It didn’t matter that, heading into Saturday’s game with NMSU, the Lobos had won the last six matchups with the longtime rival.

Effort falls just short in Rio Grande rivalry game

Lobo kicker James Aho crouched on the 37-yard line with his hands on his head as the Aggies’ bench rushed the field and the clock showed double zeros. Aho had just pushed a 47-yard game-tying field goal wide right that otherwise would have sent the Rio Grande rivalry into overtime. The Lobos fell 20-17.

Key members of the GPSA voted Saturday to follow the New Mexico Open Meetings Act to the letter. The Graduate and Professional Student Association, meeting as a committee-of-the-whole, voted in support of a constitutional clause that would require members to follow all provisions of the state law that requires legislative bodies to open their meetings to the public.

Dryer fire smokes out students

A small fire broke out in the basement laundry room of Hokona Hall late Friday morning, damaging at least one dryer and causing smoke to circulate throughout the building. Dorm residents and staff evacuated the building, and no one was injured, said Kerry Horton, Albuquerque Fire Department battalion commander. “It looks like (the dryer) probably just overheated,” he said.

Longtime rivals look evenly matched

Welcome to the Hatch green chile hot seat, Mike Locksley. The Salem Witch Trials will appear tame if the first-year head coach loses to NMSU Saturday. Locksley understands that losing to NMSU verges on sacrilege — especially since the Lobos have won the last six matchups between the two teams.

Athletics under fire for racy ads

Lobo Louie might be in the doghouse after his apparent fling with a pin-up girl from Route 66 Casino. The pair performed in two commercials released about a month ago, and Lobo Lucy isn’t the only one upset about it. The ads, filmed in partnership with UNM’s exclusive gaming sponsor, depicts the casino’s billboard beauty in a cherry “Lobos” midriff top, skimpy spandex shorts and bright red stilettos. In one ad, the camera focuses on the woman bent over with her cleavage showing while she blows a kiss in the mirror.

Religion across the board

A game where Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Kali and an unnamed Muslim figure battle against one another might be considered anti-religious, but Ben Radford, creator of “Playing Gods,” disagrees.
