Maggie Ybarra Daily Lobo | May 5President David Schmidly has imposed restrictions on faculty travel in response to the swine flu. Schmidly said in his Monday morning message that "due to increased risks associated with the H1N1 influenza World Health Organization level 5 advisory and the current Center for Disease Control travel advisory," UNM would immediately suspend all travel to Mexico.

Leah Valencia Daily Lobo | May 5New Mexico saw its first confirmed case of swine flu on Saturday, but many UNM students say they aren't concerned. "I really haven't been paying attention to it, to be honest," said freshman Elyse Jalbert. The New Mexico Department of Health reported on May 2 that an 18-year-old male from Valencia County had the H1N1 virus, or swine flu.
Republicans need to get over Obama's win, prepare for '12
May 5Editor, You lost. Get over it. This letter is directed at Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Newt Gingrich, Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, among others. I'm not sure if you recall this, but there was a democratically held presidential election in November. We hold one of these things every four years, and we have for more than 200 years now.

Regents' budget strategy robs New Mexicans, UNM
May 5Editor, Judging by the Lobo's latest reports on UNM's 2009-10 budget, the UNM Board of Regents has adopted a four-step strategy for covering its 5.2 percent increase in expenses over last year. Step one: Rob the poor to give to the rich. The budget approved by the regents Friday calls for decreasing expenditures to its branch campus by rates ranging from 6 percent at Taos and Las Alamos to about 4 percent at Gallup.
With new editor at the helm, Lobo should focus on campus
May 5Editor, I want to say congratulations to Rachel Hill for becoming the new editor-in-chief of the Daily Lobo. I have seen genuine improvement in the Lobo over the past year, and I'm hopeful that Hill's guidance will make the paper better than ever. With this change in leadership, this seems as good a time as any to explain one of my pet peeves with the Lobo, one that I think has been getting better recently, but should still be addressed.
Obama's respect toward other nations a welcome change
Matt De La O and UNM student | May 4Editor, After reading Daniel Martinez's letter, I had a nice, long laugh at the pure foolishness that he was spewing as what, I imagine, was supposed to be some sort of argument. It absolutely baffles me that people want to somehow correlate a simple formality - a meet and greet - as some sort of demeaning process for the United States.
Smaller sports should look to Marx to understand their place
Isaac Avilucea | May 4Karl Marx once told us that capitalism is "vampire-like," and that it lives only by draining the jugular of labor. A century later, mosquitoes - the bourgeois - are still sucking off oxen - the proletariat - and complaining about the blood quality. On Monday, Vanessa Strobbe wrote a column addressing the uneven distribution of funds among UNM's varsity sports.
Direction in uncertain times
May 4Change is afoot in the newsroom. Rachel Hill has taken over as Daily Lobo editor-in-chief and plans to change the role of the student newspaper in the University. As the Daily Lobo news editor this academic year, Hill oversaw the coverage of some of the biggest issues that arose on campus - from reporting on the infrastructure of UNM's student governments to digging out investigative stories on President David Schmidly.

An immigration system in peril
Pavan KalasikamDaily Lobo guest columnist | May 4With tax deadlines over, we can breathe a sigh of relief for making it through one more year of incomprehensible forms and stacks of paperwork.
