Open Letter: UNM needs help to address failings

The following is a letter circulated among and signed by 159 UNM faculty members. The present crisis at UNM affects everyone in New Mexico because it is about the education of our students and the use of our tax money. We, the faculty, are committed to helping all students become responsible citizens and successful in the career of their choice.

Groups condemn war in Iraq

Dozens of people gathered in the Galleria Plaza on Saturday morning to protest continued U.S. military involvement overseas. "Gaza, Gaza, don't you cry. Palestine will never die" protesters chanted as traffic passed in the sunny morning. Stop the War Machine and Iraq Veterans Against the War teamed up to organize the event, which took place on the sixth anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Senior found way to the top despite injuries, illness

Halfway through the 2008 track season, Jarrin Solomon contracted pneumonia and severely pulled his hamstring, ending his hopes for competing at the national level and going to the Olympics. Halfway through this season, the senior has broken his school record three times, defeated former Olympians and became an All-American en route to the best finish ever by a Lobo sprinter at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Citizens protest development plans

About 200 concerned citizens gathered at the UNM School of Law on March 15 to tell UNM planning officials how developments to the area will affect their neighborhood. Neighbors for Green Space organized the event to discuss the University's plans to develop North Campus.

Sanchez named top regent

Regent Raymond Sanchez has replaced Jamie Koch as the president of the Board of Regents. Sanchez was voted into the position during a regents meeting Friday. Regent Jack Fortner was re-elected vice president, and Regent Carolyn Abeita was elected treasurer for 2009.

UNM lights up Northwestern

Tim McGraw's "I Like It, I Love It" blared through the speakers at Isotopes Park every time the UNM baseball team scored a run against Northwestern. Suffice it to say, the Wildcats' pitchers might not be able to get the song out of their heads. Watching financial news and reading opinion pages has been rough the last year. America's financial system is teetering on the brink, our auto manufacturing industry is in shambles, and nearly every other segment of America's red-hot economy of a couple years ago has nearly ground to a cold-gray standstill.

Runner nabs national title

Staff Report The indoor track season culminated in coronation for one Lobo. On March 14, Lee Emanuel became UNM's first national champion since Michael Solomon won the 600-yard run in 1977. "Coach told me that if I thought someone was catching up to me, to just run harder and go after it," Emanuel told GoLobos.

President's broken promise raises doubts about integrity

Editor, I have always been an independent voter who voted for the person I thought was truly devoted to serving the best interests of all instead of only one political party or any special interests. I voted for Barack Obama in November because I felt he was truly devoted to bringing about needed changes that would be good for all of us.

Balderas meets with students on audit

State Auditor Hector Balderas met with students Thursday to discuss the possibility of an additional audit of the University. He met with about 30 students outside of El Centro de la Raza. Balderas has been meeting with faculty, administrators and students throughout the week to decide whether a partial audit of the University's finances is warranted.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Dairese Gary played like a beast, but the Lobos came up short in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday. In a 75-67 loss to Wyoming, sophomore Gary kept the UNM men's basketball team in the game compliments of a late surge.

Stem-cell research violates fundamental moral principles

Editor, Some scientists think they might have found the fountain of youth - too bad for the young. As an undergraduate student at UNM, I worked with a very intelligent professor in the medical field. We studied the pluripotency of the stem cells in the quail embryo.

No three-peat for Lobos as Utah takes semifinals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Take three against Utah was just like take one and two for the UNM women's basketball team in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Friday. The Lobos came ever-so close to winning, only to be edged 55-54 in the last few seconds of the game.

Lobos down Southern in first round of NIT

The UNM women's basketball team found its winning way again and maybe gained some experience for its younger players in a first-round match-up with Southern in the women's National Invitational Tournament. The Lobos defeated Jaguars soundly 72-44 at The Pit on Wednesday.

You deserve a break. You have worked hard all semester. Now it's time to relax. I hope you have scheduled some serious downtime for spring break. Sleep late, play a lot, eat chocolate, rejoice. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The buzz of the horn sounded for the UNM men's basketball team as the clock expired. And for the second time in as many years, the Lobos flat-lined, bowing out to Wyoming 75-67 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday.
