Schmidly shouldn't allow Fox to give commencement speech

Editor, We are writing in protest of Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico and CEO of Coca-Cola, serving as the commencement speaker this spring and of UNM's collaboration with Fox as described on the front page of UNM's Web site. As two former presidents of the Student Organization of Latin American Studies, we are appalled at UNM's collaboration with a man who has been accused of presiding over human-rights abuses of indigenous peoples, women and human rights activists, among others.

At least 3 turn down 'mission-critical' job

Despite the hiring freeze at UNM, applicants are still being considered for director of Admissions, a position deemed "mission-critical" by the Provost's Office. However, at least three candidates who have been offered the position have turned it down. Vice President of Enrollment Management Carmen Alvarez Brown interviewed Richard Matthew Hulett last week, and he declined the position.

Women are talking about their vaginas, said Esteli Juarez, director of "The Vagina Monologues." Juarez is directing the show for the third year in a row with support from the Women's Law Caucus and other law organizations on campus such as the Native American Law Students Association and the Jewish Law Students Association.

Deficit may put squeeze on UNM research

UNM department chairs are grappling with a large deficit that threatens to reduce the amount of overhead return they receive on grant money for years to come. The $4.4 million deficit was created under the direction of Terry Yates, former vice president for Research and Economic Development.

Lobos prove they can dominate at home and on the open road

After a month on the road, the No. 44 UNM men's tennis team returned to Albuquerque in style Sunday. The Lobos swept Montana State 7-0, improving to 7-1 overall on the year. Head coach Alan Dils said he was glad to be back on familiar courts. "It's always nice to play at home," he said.

Danridge-Martinez duo lock in win

Tony Danridge and Roman Martinez had The Pit rocking early and often Saturday against the San Diego State Aztecs. The duo made a statement in the first half, combining for 30 of the Lobos' 40 first-half points in Saturday's 75-49 win at The Pit. At the 13:21 mark, Danridge threw down a monster dunk, and with 9:10 remaining in the first half, Danridge lit up SDSU with a two-handed alley-oop dunk compliments of Dairese Gary's assist.

Freshmen dive into collegiate competition

On Wednesday, the women's swimming and diving team travels to Oklahoma City to compete in the Mountain West Conference championships. And for a team that is laden with freshmen, these are uncharted waters, head coach Tracy Ljone said. Ljone said she wants to see how her freshmen experience an intense and pressure-filled atmosphere.

The Student Fee Review Board, which drafted its final recommendations on Friday, is stuck between a rock and a hard place: the depressed economy and shallow pockets of college students. As departments face the possibility of receiving less funding from the State, many have asked for increases in their SFRB funding.

UNM workers must do part in time of economic crisis

Editor, As a general principle, I think people ought to hold their governing bodies accountable, whether elected or not. But holding others accountable needn't and shouldn't preclude taking personal responsibility for one's community's welfare. It should be too obvious to be stated, but I'll say it anyway: We're in a recession.
