UNM makes plans for new rec center

UNM wants to build a new recreation center for its growing student population and increase student fees by $117 per semester to pay construction costs. UNM's Division of Student Affairs conducted an online survey in February to evaluate recreation programs and see what improvements students wanted.

Students might see a $100 increase in student fees to fund the construction of an additional recreation center, said Kim Kloeppel, vice president for Student Affairs. Students voted to support the building of a recreation center on campus, according to a survey conducted in February.

Program aims to help grad students cope

Graduate students can get coaching and support to help them navigate the pressures of writing theses, keeping up with coursework and maintaining deadlines. Ray Mitchell, a counselor for Student Health and Counseling, has teamed with Chris Ramirez, president of GPSA, to start a coaching workshop to help students get the help they need to complete their degrees.

SHAC will host a screening today that focuses on body-image problems, which affect college-age students more than other age groups.

Student Heath and Counseling will hold a body image screening today as part of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. "Appearance is a big deal, and it is OK to feel good about your appearance and take time to look good and feel good," said Jessica Spurrier, health education manager.

University issues survey on remodeling of Johnson Center

UNM's Student Affairs department is conducting another online survey to evaluate recreation programs and suggest improvements to Johnson Center, said Kim Kloeppel, fiscal planning officer for the department. Kloeppel said that as part of the planning phase for remodeling Johnson Center, UNM hired consulting firm Brailsford & Dunlavey, based in Washington, D.

UNM prepares to close Briefcase storage system

The Briefcase that UNM has long provided its students will soon snap shut forever. Briefcase is the name of an online file-storage system available to students when they log into their UNM accounts. Vanessa Baca, spokeswoman for Information Technology Services, said the application will be removed Friday.

Chemistry sees decline in faculty

Faculty losses are affecting another department at UNM. The chemistry department has seen a steep decline in full-time tenured faculty. Only 12 full-time faculty members teach in the department, chemistry professor Patrick Mariano said. "We are down significantly, with no hope in the near future that it will change," he said.

Debate centers on abortion

The UNM Reproductive Justice Coalition hosted a debate between anti-abortion and abortion rights groups in the SUB on Monday. Representatives of the Right to Life Committee of New Mexico and NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico participated in the discussion. Molly Maguire-Marshall, RJC organizer, said the group focuses on reproductive rights, access to health care, birth control and sex education.
