Palin's nomination a cynical slap in face to women voters

Editor, I love the hypocrisy the neocons have shown in their pathetic scramble to portray vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin as qualified. They have been reduced to claiming that having five children should be more than enough to qualify her for the second most powerful position in the free world.

Film festival explores gay, lesbian perspectives

The Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is gaining popularity. Closet Cinema will present the sixth annual festival from Friday to Oct. 2 at four venues in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Over the past five years, the Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival has become one of the biggest film festivals in New Mexico, said program director Roberto Appicciafoco, and last year it saw a 30 percent increase in ticket sales.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down almost 3,000 points from this time last year, and many major banks are flirting with bankruptcy. In light of the changing economy, University experts encourage students to consider their finances now and plan for the future.

Survey shows job fair a success

The Student Employment Office is calling UNM's on-campus job fair - held the first week of school - a success. Twenty-three percent of studentsˇwere offered anˇinterviewˇatˇthe fair, according to survey results released this week. Forty-five percent of students who attended the fair were freshman, 16 percent were sophomores, 20 percent were juniors, 8 percent were seniors and 9.

Student Services to relocate in spring

Soon students will no longer be able to access financial aid and admissions on Main Campus, as plans to move the Student Services Center are in the works. The center, now in Mesa Vista Hall, will relocate most of its student-oriented amenities to the old Lockheed Martin building off of University Boulevard and Avenida Cesar Chavez - about one mile from UNM - by the spring semester.

Editor, Margaret Sanger's son, Grant, was in my father's Columbia University Medical School classes. His name would be broadcast into the hallways, that he was "needed again to go to jail and bail out your mother." The young medical students cheered for her good cause.

Angelica Norwood, owner of the Tokyo Hardcore clothing store, learned to make clothes a few years ago. "I actually really started making them when I got pregnant, because I stopped going out, and I would just sit at home and sew and sew and sew," she said.

'Burn After Reading' a dark-humor hit

It's nice to see the Coen brothers being funny again, even if it is their typical dark humor. "Burn After Reading" is in the comedic style of their previous works "Raising Arizona" and "Fargo." While it isn't immediately obvious, the film is actually told after the fact, in a discussion about the events between two CIA agents in Langley, Va.

Sigma Chi members cited in party bust

Sigma Chi fraternity members were charged with minor-in-possession offenses when police broke up an off-campus party Sept. 14, according to a police report. Sigma Chi President Jacob Salmon said the incident occurred at a private party and that penalties for the members are being administered by the fraternity's executive board.

Editor, I was searching for information on the presidential candidates' positions on higher education, where I have worked for 14 years in New Mexico. I was disappointed with the Albuquerque Journal's coverage on higher education, which sent me to the candidates' Web sites.

Albuquerque is pooling its resources to send Gabi Rojas to dance school in New York City. Rojas graduated from the UNM dance and theater department last semester and was accepted into the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater school. Her benefit show, "Muevete," is at 7 p.

Organization accused of illegally registering voters on campus

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now is under pressure from the UNM College Democrats and Republicans alike for allegedly registering voters illegally. According to an article in the Albuquerque Journal on Sept. 17, the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office notified prosecutors in state and federal law enforcement agencies that it had received fraudulent registration cards from ACORN.

The loss of faculty in major departments such as mathematics and statistics has become a major issue, and there are no funds to solve the problem, department members said. "We are in a crisis situation for mathematics and statistics in terms of faculty," said mathematics professor James Ellison.

Editor, Katie Newell was mistaken when she stated in her Sept. 12 letter to the editor that recycling bins had been permanently removed from Mesa Vista. The recycling bins were removed from the halls of Mesa Vista, but there are still many locations to recycle paper, glass and aluminum cans inside offices and departments at Mesa Vista.

TV show a hilarious mix of law, rock 'n' roll

The KiMo Theatre was filled with laughter during Sunday's TV-pilot premiere of "Legal Hawks." Produced by local filmmakers Isaac Kappy, Josh Klein and Will Davidson, the show's characters were upbeat and entertaining. With Kappy in a main role, the production was very creative.

Group embraces love, friendship by quilting

Quilting has been passed down from mothers to children for generations. On Monday at the UNM Continuing Education building, almost 100 members of the New Mexico Quilters' Association gathered around an exhibition of quilts that were judged in a quilting contest at the State Fair.
