Marjorie Goldstein helps finance medical orgs

The University of New Mexico’s Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial officer at UNM Medical Group, Inc. Marjorie Goldstein said she considers herself to be a humble person that has had success due to her strong financial capabilities. She helped raise $143 million in financing to open UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, according to Albuquerque Business First.

Fiestas brings annual fun to Johnson Field

As college students grow more and more stressed throughout the semester, Fiestas at the University of New Mexico comes around for an opportunity to blow off steam and dress up, according to UNM freshman Rachel Shiver. Fiestas started as a rodeo, said Chance Hoover, the Students Special Events Executive director. “When the University was founded, a couple years after that, the festival was a three-day rodeo, and it did include live music,” he said.

NM Dream Team shares info on immigrant rights

The New Mexico Dream Team discussed immigrants rights and resources at a community gathering at South Valley Academy Monday. Isaac de Luna, an undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico and the communications director for the NM Dream Team, addressed what to do if Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, were to come to a community member’s home. The tips included: There is no obligation to open the door to anyone. Keep in mind the right to remain silent. Do not sign anything, even if they present what seems to be an order for removal unless an attorney is present. Create an emergency plan to secure family members and possessions.

Sandia Labs and Anderson team up to create degree program

A new symbiotic degree program is underway, connecting the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management and Sandia National Laboratories. This program aims to give UNM graduates job opportunities at Sandia National Laboratories and the education to succeed. The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding for project management education and professional development on Jan. 31, according to a press release. This agreement creates a Master of Science degree in project controls, project management and program management, as well as new internship possibilities at the laboratories.

Career Issue: Rebecca Brusseau is unashamed of her past work

Dressed in lingerie and serving tables taught Rebecca Brusseau to have confidence in anything she does. Brusseau was embarrassed, judged and, at times, praised for working at the Library Bar & Grill, she said. Brusseau is currently double-majoring in Women's Studies and Africana Studies at the University of New Mexico, and she has been ridiculed her for the “real life application” of such studies, she said.

VEX Robotics Competition introduces kids to STEM

A three-team alliance merged victorious at the VEX Robotics Competition held at the University of New Mexico’s Centennial Engineering Center on Jan. 27, 2018. The winners of the best of three final rounds were: Navajo Prep Robotics from Navajo Preparatory School, School of Dreams Team 2 from School of Dreams Academy and the Cleveland Colts from Cleveland Middle School.

UNM discontinues Lynda.com services

The University of New Mexico’s subscription to Lynda.com, a tutorial website for Adobe programs, Microsoft programs and more, was officially discontinued on Dec. 20, 2017, according to an email sent out to Lynda.unm.edu users by the Information Technologies Center for Student Success at UNM. “Increasing licensing costs, ongoing budget reductions and low overall utilization of Lynda.unm.edu all contributed to the difficult decision to discontinue this service in favor of competing priorities,” said IT Chief Information Officer Duane Ej Arruti.

Review: Pilobolus tells story with dance

Audience members were captured by dance group Pilobolus’ performance at Popejoy Hall Friday night. As the lights went down, the group opened by greeting the audience. In a more comical, light-hearted introduction, they leaped over and on each other shouting, “Hey.” Once audience members were acquainted to the group, they were completely captivated by Pilobolus’ next dance.

Jazmin succeeds as lawyer despite immigration challenges

Jazmin Coronel is the first Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient at the University of New Mexico to be sworn into the BAR to become a practicing attorney. This special circumstance, however, came with conditions, she said.

Yazmin uses her experience to help other immigrants

Yazmin Irazoqui is a medical student at the University of New Mexico and a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient. Irazoqui and her twin sister, Jazmin Coronel, grew up in Phoenix, Arizona where they quickly learned they were expected to assimilate, she said.
