Column: The fall of man was caused by men

In the beginning, a woman supposedly cast humanity out of Paradise because of her disobedience to God. The misogynistic distortion and sexist slant that permeates our history in religion, politics and society still define our culture to this day. Another religious example of this would be the story of Mary Magdalene, who was actually the "Apostle of the Apostles" - a founder of the Christian religion, yet many today still believe she was a prostitute, a story created by Pope Gregory in 591.

Column: Putting racism to death

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist I often hear of the progress our nation has made in eliminating racism, but this self-praise should be restrained. Of course progress has been made, yet the severe racism that still exists is often ignored. Those who believe in a renewed America in which ...

Column: U.S. must impeach Bush

Whether it be unwarranted spying on peaceful Americans, the incompetence in response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster or the memo detailing President Bush's intention to invade Iraq regardless of Iraq's weapons capabilities or United Nations' support, the number of reasons why Bush and Cheney should be immediately impeached steadily increases.

Column: Ensuring the uninsured

Today would be a good day for me to quit some unhealthy habits, like drinking and smoking. I don't have health insurance, and I'm relying on continuing to have a healthy body. I'm far from alone in being uninsured - the number of Americans with no health coverage is projected to pass 50 million this coming year.

Column: Voting still a murky affair

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist Earlier this week, I went to the early-voting location in Downtown Albuquerque and cast my vote for mayor, the minimum wage and the financing of elections, among other ballot measures. When leaving the polling booth, I noticed on the back of the electronic vote-tabulating machines there was a label that said "Modem Equipped.

Column: Protest to save democracy

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist My feet still hurt. Sunday night, I left Washington, D.C., to head back to New Mexico with other Green Party members from a massive demonstration and march against the war in Iraq and for the impeachment of President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Column: End entire nuke industry

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist If you're reading this at UNM, you are about three miles from the largest stockpile of non-deployed nuclear weapons in the world at Kirtland Air Force Base. It's estimated the stockpile consists of more than 2,500 nuclear warheads.

Column: Cannabis a civil rights issue

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo Changing our hemp and marijuana laws is a policy reform usually called for by Independents, Greens and Democrats, but now Republicans are calling for change too. You may recall that former Republican governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson, was an outspoken opponent of marijuana and hemp prohibition.
