Quantum mechanics center

UNM is home to one of the nation’s only university Centers for Quantum Information and Control. The center’s director, professor Ivan Deutsch, said the CQuIC has made UNM one of the most visible universities in the area of quantum information research.

Study: Economy needs grads

UNM is doomed to constantly raise tuition and student fees in order to survive, according to a global management consulting firm. A report entitled “Winning by degrees: The strategies of highly productive higher-education institutions,” written by McKinsey & Company, said conventional state universities, such as UNM, are “ripe for disruption.” “Due to decreasing state support and increasing costs, higher education tuition and fees rose by 439 percent between 1985 and 2005,” the report said.

A group of UNM advertising students said they weren’t satisfied with the opportunities available to them at existing advertising firms, so they decided to create one of their own.

Celebrating life before Columbus

The sound of drums echoed across campus Monday as UNM’s Native American Studies Indigenous Research Group celebrated “Indigenous Day.” NASIRG co-chair and student Alyssa Begay said the group organized Indigenous Day events as an alternative to the nationally recognized Columbus Day.

Tutor: APS ‘insufficient, apathetic’

The amount of students attending Albuquerque Public Schools that don’t graduate is 37 percent and, of those, many have trouble earning their GEDs, getting jobs or attending college, GED Preparatory Program officials said.
