Punk album forgets genre's rebel roots

by Michael Bennett Daily Lobo It is said good music goes through three stages, following a pattern of prototype, archetype and stereotype. Bang Sugar Bang's release Thwak Thwak Go Crazy! undoubtedly falls into the stereotype category. It is a sad matter when a band attempts to break conventions and instead languishes in them.

Humor, good music merge

Products of a rich Chicago dance scene, Greenskeepers successfully flip between genres on the group's latest release, Pleetch. The group covers disco, electrofunk, soul, pop, electroclash, trip-hop and house styles without batting an eyelash and carries off each foray with a sly smile.

Blood Brothers make ears bleed

By chewing the rulebook up and projectile vomiting it onto its dissenters, the Blood Brothers' album was an adverse reaction to the close-mindedness of the Seattle punk scene. Formed initially as a side project in 1997, the Blood Brothers blends high-pitched pop vocals with obscurely mellow beats that suddenly delve into hard-edged metal riffs.

Christian band lacks originality

Hawaiian-based quartet Olivia the Band offers a rehash of the same trite clichÇs in the pop-punk style. The Oahu natives say they are trying to convey a message, but the lyrics have no substance. For all their good intentions, they fail to say anything meaningful, and their self-titled debut album is unfortunately laughable.

UK indie rock makes waves in America

Independent music from across the pond took America by storm in 2004. From, the Libertines to Ferdinand, its no longer just the Queen's kids who are moving to an English beat. The Libertines A year has passed since singer and guitarist Pete Doherty was released from prison after burglarizing co-songwriter Carl Barat's apartment in a drug-soaked rage.
