Requirements revised for student grants, awards

The UNM Scholarships Office and the Student Government Accounting Office now require more documentation from organizations that want to issue awards or grants to individual students.

Departmental and non-departmental organizations must provide a list of eligibility requirements for awards, guidelines for the award application process and criteria detailing how award recipients are determined.

If organizations do not submit this information, the requests will not be processed.

Any questions or concerns regarding this matter should be directed to the Student Government Accounting Office at 277-7888.

UNM scientists test new rapid vaccine methods

Scientists at UNM's School of Medicine's Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases have tested a new method for rapid vaccine development that could speed and simplify the preparation of future vaccines.

This vaccine is the first of any kind that has successfully blocked the Sin Nombre hantavirus, which has taken the lives of 26 New Mexicans.

After the mailed anthrax attacks of last fall, scientists have become increasingly concerned about the prospect of further attacks by lethal viruses.

The scientists caution that much more work will be needed before vaccines such as theirs will be used in the clinic.

The center is supported by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that was made available to the School of Medicine through the efforts of Rep. Heather Wilson.

Library sponsors new graduate fellowships

UNM General Library's Center for Regional Studies and Center for Southwest Research will sponsor five new graduate student fellowships for the 2002-03 academic year.

The fellowships involve working with CSWR collections to make them available and accessible to researchers and the public.

Each fellowship offers a stipend to the applicant, who will work 20 hours per week during the fall and spring.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a UNM graduate program and apply by July 22.

Descriptions of each fellowships, selection criteria and application information are available at www.unm.edu/~cswrref/engfellowships.html.

Clinic helps patients cope with enlarged limbs

UNM Hospitals Rehabilitation Services is offering a clinic for people who have gone through radiation treatment that resulted in enlarged limbs.

Lymphedema is a condition where one limb starts to outsize the other by more than 50 percent due to an incorrectly functioning lymphnode system.

Lympedema is treatable but not curable. At the clinic, patients can get treatment, known as Combined Decongestive Therapy, and help with long-term management of the disease.

Daily treatment lasts three to four weeks, after which the patient wears a compression garment during the day and bandages at night.

The clinic is offered through Rehab Services at 1025 Medical Arts Ave. Those who need more information are encouraged to call 272-9020.
