LETTER: C&J cannot seem to step up and do its job

Editor,

Thank you so much for enlightening the UNM student body about the inadequacy of the journalism program.

Supposedly, the accreditation team is not happy with the combined Communication & Journalism Department. It also seems that the board of C & J at UNM can't seem to step up to the plate and do the job that needs to be done to fix this accreditation problem. Journalism graduates have put UNM on the map as a progressive University going forward. So, why go backwards now?

Obviously, these lazy board members need to get off their duffs and do the job they are paid to do, or maybe new enthusiastic replacements need to come on board to fulfill the needs of the students. This C & J board has deceived the public, tuition-paying parents and the students. If New Mexico State University can do the job, then what really is the problem at UNM? Even the journalists at the Albuquerque Journal are in disbelief of this situation. Aren't they ever so fortunate that when they graduated, accreditation was part of their diplomas.

I surely hope that other departments are not this deficient and can keep their promises and high standards so that UNM students can be proud of their University and not embarrassed. Giving up on the accreditation race before it even starts is a disaster. What a disappointment!
