Flier alleges coach committed assault

Staff Report

Fliers posted across campus yesterday bearing the name and photograph of an assistant coach within the Athletics department stated "I sexually assault UNM women basketball players."

University officials are investigating the matter, UNM spokeswoman Susan McKinsey said.

"The University is looking into this, but as of now I do not know what that will entail," McKinsey said.

UNM released a statement regarding the fliers late yesterday afternoon.

"If these fliers are connected to the previous stories about an alleged sexual assault, and we can only assume they are, the University cannot confirm any names. But what we did state publicly before is that the University conducted an extensive investigation, and there was not sufficient evidence to substantiate the allegation."

A former Lobo women's basketball player alleged an assistant coach sexually assaulted her inside the University Stadium complex in April of 2002.

After an administrative investigation, UNM awarded the former student-athlete a settlement worth roughly the equivalent of her remaining scholarship plus attorney's fees.

The former-student athlete never filed a police report or publicly accused the coach, her attorney told the Daily Lobo on Sept. 22. The attorney said University officials told the former student-athlete that filing a police report would increase the chances of her name appearing in media stories.

McKinsey said University officials heard about the fliers sometime yesterday morning.

"Somebody alerted us about the fliers and I told the vice presidents," she said. "We wanted to make sure the president knew about it right away."
