(U-WIRE) COLUMBUS, Ohio - African-American student enrollment at Ohio State University dropped this year, despite results of a national poll that said OSU is a good choice for minorities.

According to an article in The Columbus Dispatch on Oct. 18, African-American student enrollment fell 28 percent this year compared to last year. The decrease stemmed from the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that eliminated the system of awarding points based on race to undergraduate applicants.

Because of the ruling, the application process now makes applicants complete four additional essay questions.

Tuesday was the last day for the fraternity to appeal the Greek Judicial Board's ruling for violating the university's hazing code of conduct.

Mike Rollo, associate vice president for Student Affairs, said the fraternity had not made an appeal at press time Tuesday.

According to police documents, witnesses said they saw the pledges lead Duct-taped brothers into an apartment complex Oct. 5.

Dorm students at Kansas required to be vaccinated

(U-WIRE) LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Kansas will require all students living in university-owned group housing to receive a meningitis vaccination beginning Aug. 1, 2005.

Research shows students in group housing are six times more likely to contract the disease, said Kathryn Nemeth Tuttle, associate vice provost for student success, the department that includes Student Health Services.

The decision came after Andy Marso, 2004 KU graduate, contracted the disease last spring.
