Editor,
I fail to understand why UNM has the money to provide bonuses to top executives - for simply doing their jobs - when the Legislature gave UNM a set percentage wage increase.
I don't see bonuses for UNM staff who do their jobs well or even extremely well. My job title is classified under the bargaining unit, and I, as well as all others whose jobs are classified, have to beg just to receive the same raises that non-bargaining unit staff do.
Are we valued less than those staff members? Don't we make up the majority of the staff here at UNM? How, in good conscience, can anyone think that giving bonuses to UNM's executives is justified while the majority of UNM's staff wages do not even keep up with the rate of inflation?
I, for one, will be lucky to receive a raise that will hopefully provide me with a full tank of gas each month. That's a little shabby compared to a $20,000 bonus.
But, then again, obviously I am not a valued staff member at UNM. The little people make this University run - pretty successfully, I might add - and not the top administrators.
Maybe the top administrators should find out just how little money their staff makes, but I'm sure they just don't care.
