Editor,
True science is a body of unproven theories. True scientists conduct experiments to determine the validity of a particular theory.
As they do that, three things can occur: more evidence is found to support the theory, sufficient evidence is found to discount the theory, or evidence of a totally new theory is found.
This rigorous method of dealing with what is known - and what is not known - keeps true scientists both humble and dedicated to the continued search for what is truly real.
If this same rigorous procedure were applied by all of us to our religious beliefs, there would be far less strife in the world, and we could begin working together for world peace.
