Editor,
Some may not be aware of the non-partisan Albuquerque mayoral election taking place on Oct. 4. We feel it is important for the UNM community to be cognizant of the impact that the mayor's leadership has upon us, as students.
Taxation, rent, public transportation and safety of the campus and surrounding areas are examples of broad issues that a mayor's decisions may profoundly influence. Other such issues can be as specific as those we see in the Daily Lobo, such as alcohol being served at all-ages venues and the party patrol.
GPSA and ASUNM are cosponsoring a public forum to which the mayoral candidates will address such topics. We invite you to join us and the candidates Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. in SUB Ballrooms B and C.
Moderated by Professor Chris Garcia from the Political Science department, the forum will include all four candidates: Mayor Martin Chavez, Eric Griego, David Steele and Brad Winter. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. This event will be free to the public.
Prior to the event, we welcome the submission of questions for the forum from students and the campus community. Please email your questions to asunmprz@unm.edu or gpsapres@unm.edu. We will review the submissions at noon Wednesday for inclusion in the forum.
We hope that you will take this opportunity to learn more about the candidates for Albuquerque's mayor.
Brittany Jaeger,
ASUNM President
Buckner Creel,
GPSA President
