Terryn Granados' first career goal as a Lobo came just when the UNM women's soccer team needed it.

The Lobos got their first win of the season against the Eastern Washington Eagles 2-0 Sunday in the New Mexico Nike Classic.

Granados scored four minutes into the game, and junior Bridgette Sanchez added an insurance goal for the Lobos in the second half.

The Lobos improved their record to 1-1-1, while the Eagles' record stands at 1-3-0.

Kaela Kelly, a junior midfielder, had the assist on Granados' goal. She passed the ball from the near corner to Granados at the far post, putting Granados in position to score.

After Granados scored, the Lobos and the Eagles spent the rest of the first half battling for control of the ball. The teams were evenly matched and the half ended with the score at 1-0.

In the second half, the Lobos put additional pressure on the Eagles' defense. Sanchez, a junior forward, scored her first goal of the season during the second half. Kelly was credited with the assist.

Despite the win, the Lobos did not start the game the way they wanted to, Sanchez said.

"We started out not too well and we just tried to relax," she said. "We found a way to win."

The Lobos had 24 shots during the game, 11 of which were on goal. They had 13 shots in the first half and 11 shots in the second half. The Eagles only had five shots with two of those coming on goal. Junior midfielder Eryn Paetz led the Lobos with four shots.

UNM senior goalkeeper Kristen Winters had two saves during the game, improving her record to 19 career shutouts.

The Lobos' freshmen and sophomores stepped up to the challenge and had a total of six shots. Tabitha Bunch, a freshman from California, had two of those shots.

Head coach Kit Vela said playing freshmen and sophomores demonstrates how deep the Lobos' bench is.

Compared to Friday's game against the University of Alabama, Sunday's game was slower-paced, Sanchez said.

"It was a lot slower," she said. "We stooped down to their level."

The Lobos lost Friday's game against Alabama, 1-0. The Crimson Tide's Allison DeLisle scored when she headed in the ball off a free kick during the first half.
