Ice Wolves glad to be home

by Travis Weber

The last three games of the UNM Ice Wolves' eight-game road trip didn't quite go the way they wanted.

The team lost two out of three games last week in Utah after starting the season 4-1 for the first time in its history.

The Ice Wolves dropped their first game last Thursday night to Utah Valley State 7-4. They followed that loss with a 6-4 win against Utah Valley on Friday.

"On Thursday, we just seemed really tired from all the driving, but on Friday we definitely had some rest, and we looked good," head coach Joel Cormier said.

Saturday was a different story, though, as the team played without two of its leaders, defenseman Jason Schulz and leading scorer Ian McMaster.

With the two absences and seven straight games on the road, the Wolves lost 6-3 to Brigham Young University.

"We were short a couple of very important players on Saturday, and I think just playing against a tough team like that for your third game in three days is tough," Cormier said.

The Wolves play their first home games of the season this weekend against rival Texas Tech, who they split games with last year.

"We don't know much about them this year, only that they are 0-2 last we heard," Cormier said. "We are just happy to finally be playing at home, and hopefully we get a lot of people out there."

Cormier said because the New Mexico Scorpions aren't around this year, UNM can provide some entertainment to the hockey faithful.

"We just hope that all those hockey fans that would normally go watch the Scorpions will come out on Friday after the football game and then on Saturday as well," he said. "We would definitely appreciate the support."
