Letter: Caldera worked hard for ungrateful students

Editor,

When something goes wrong in the United States, the first person to be blamed is the president, so I guess it is no surprise that UNM students are holding Louis Caldera responsible for every single problem at the University.

Rivkela Brodsky's editorial was harsh and unfair. I'm sorry, but I don't expect the president of UNM to memorize the name of everyone he hands a diploma. Furthermore, if Caldera doesn't know your name, it is probably because you have failed to be involved with UNM in any capacity. Caldera knows the names of the people who are actually doing things and making changes on campus. So unless the alumnus Brodsky described was former ASUNM President Kevin Stevenson, I don't see the problem.

Every time I have spoken with Caldera, he has been cordial and supportive. He has worked hard and fought for ungrateful students, and I am sorry to see him go. His credentials are honorable and UNM was lucky even to get him. Of course, maybe the reason Caldera was such a horrible president was because he actually took time away from precious UNM to spend time with his family. I have seen him and his family all over Albuquerque, and I doubt presidents of other universities have similar priorities.

Louis Caldera had unrealistic expectations. While he didn't know everyone's name or call 911 for a student who didn't have toilet paper in a Dane Smith bathroom, he has given a lot to UNM. Unlike the regents, who are really screwing over students, he has made connections.

And for the record, students who actually give a damn about UNM did recognize him. So I am eager to see whom the regents pick next, as they are always full of wonderful surprises.
