This is the first of a monthly feature on the Daily Lobo's Opinion page, a forum open to the UNM and local community for thoughtful exchange on a variety of ideas and events ranging from the abstract to the concrete and the local to the international.
There are broad issues that concern almost everyone, whose many facets are too complex for a single letter, editorial or column to begin to encompass.
In order to offer a more complete and diverse range of thought on important topics, the Lobo will use the last Tuesday of every month to feature an expanded section on one of these broad themes advertised for the weeks before. We encourage anyone with something to say relating to that month's topic to write in so that our monthly expanded section will present the most varied selection of voices and perspectives possible.
These forums will be controversial, so readers are certain to find something with which they sympathize, something they didn't know, or something that drives them crazy. The democracy in which we live and to which we should each contribute depends in large part not only on forming one's own opinions but also on being aware of the opinions of others. Even opinions others find foolish are best exposed publicly, so that responses can be produced and ignorance addressed.
So, as always, should something you see in this larger forum excite, stimulate, befuddle, infuriate or otherwise provoke a reaction - send us a letter.
