Editor,
I think it's high time the media got into high gear. Cheney's shooting of an innocent hunter - well, the guy is a lawyer - was criminal on three counts. Cheney was drunk, did not have a proper hunting license and he shot a guy in the face.
I lived in Corpus Christi, and am very familiar with the game and fish laws there, as well as the sociopolitical climate. So, to all who say it was just an accident, try again.
Drunk poachers who shoot other hunters always go to jail in south Texas. The only exceptions are extremely rich white guys, and that's what the media is trying to express.
As for the idea that birdshot is not seriously injurious, it penetrated Whittington's chest cavity and entered his heart. Whittington will die earlier in his life than if he had not been shot through the heart. That's a fact - I'm a retired intensive care unit and emergency room nurse. And to the media, I say hoorah - but what took you so long?
I wish there would have been a bigger flap about Bush and Cheney ending democracy in the United States - after all, they stole two elections, with illegal help from relatives in Florida and Christian fascists in Ohio.

And no one blew any horns when Bush and Cheney stopped freedom of speech in America, as illustrated by the fact that I was born in and live in the country that invented free speech and freedom of the press, but haven't yet seen those mysterious cartoons that appear to be starting World War III.
And where's the scoop on Bush and Cheney's further violation of the Constitution regarding illegal wiretapping? It's illegal, and there's still news to be scoured from the Abramoff debacle, and the illegal oil-grabbing war in Iraq, and how it was based on falsified evidence, and did everyone forget Katrina?
That was a cataclysmic failure of the system that Bush and Cheney promised was fixed after Sept. 11, 2001. Of course, Halliburton made out well on that one, too.
Also, will the media mention to America that Bush and Cheney totally dismantled the Environmental Protection Agency, please.
The list goes on and on - maybe that's why the media is having a frenzy over Cheney's shotgun rampage, because it's about damn time somebody held these White House yahoos accountable.
So go, go, go, media, and put it in overdrive.
