I am writing in response to Jared Thormahlen's letter in Wednesday's Daily Lobo regarding the effects the abortion discussion has had.
For the past two weeks I have read the many letters written on the subject of abortion, being appalled at some, agreeing with many, but having a similar reaction to all of them as Thormahlen.
Abortion is obviously an incredibly heated and touchy subject for many people and many political associations, and I found as I read the letters that many people have forgotten what an opinion page is all about - expressing opinions. Writers would resort to accusations and insults rather than have open enough minds to step into another person's shoes for a brief moment to view it from their side.
Thormahlen's letter was different, and for that I have incredible respect for him. This surprised me to some degree, especially when I read that he was in fact a conservative, and I am an admitted liberal and registered Democrat. The fact that our political associations differed is not what surprised me; it was the fact that others who differed in the same political views could have such a heated and hate-filled argument over an issue, while he and I could both be in almost complete agreement about it.
It was this realization that prompted me to write this letter. Even though I disagree with what he may believe, I agree with his way of believing it.

I wanted to express my thanks to Thormahlen for having the ability to do what very few people on either side of the political debate have the ability to do: Admit that he does not know the correct course of action, and to not try to force anyone else into doing something that he thinks is right for him.
Thank you, Jared - you've re-established my faith in Republicans and political debate.
