Editor,
Several days ago I heard a question on the radio that asked, "What would you change to make the future a better place?" A lot of answers were called in - legalize marijuana, put women in charge or take better care of the poor. I knew instantly what my answer would be.
An end to abortion.
When society has a respect for life at its most innocent and utterly defenseless level, people may begin to respect life in general: the physically challenged, the poor and the elderly. When a woman kills her unborn child, and as a society we approve of that action by passing that law or amendment, how can we be expected to respect any form of human life? Is it any surprise there are wars, poverty, disease, neglect and abuse in this world when there are women killing their own children legally?
I am not ignorant. I know that abortion has been around for thousands of years and will be around for thousands more. Murder will always be with us. So will fear, jealousy and hate. But how can it be condoned? In any other situation people are punished for their crimes, but when a doctor stops that little beating heart and throws the body in the trash, who is there to defend the smallest of victims? It is not the mother's heart he's stopping. It is her little boy's or girl's, and it is not her body.
No, the world will not begin to change until human life is respected at all levels - from conception to natural death.
