Letter: UNM should continue to invest in solar energy

Editor,

I would like to take a moment and congratulate the Board of Regents at UNM for taking the initiative and investing in clean renewable energy.

New Mexico can and should be the leader on developing renewable resources - our state has the second greatest solar potential in the country. This is why the Board of Regents should be proud to be investing in Advent Solar, and we should continue to work as a community to find even more ways to reduce global-warming pollution and save energy.

There's no limit on what we can do - the New Mexico Public Interest Research Group student chapter is joining a campaign called the Campus Climate Challenge that encourages universities to adopt proposals like the Advent Solar deal so our campus can eventually produce no global warming pollution.

Some schools are making amazing strides in this direction - the Massachusetts Institute of Technology just completed a solar panel project on a third university building, and now has panels on its library, a museum and the student center, which provide the school with 11,500-kilowatt hours of solar energy.

UNM can do the same and, in doing so, set the precedent for other schools in New Mexico to move away from their dependency on fossil fuels by promoting a strong viable solar industry here in our state.
