Editor,
There are many issues concerning UNM that need to be addressed, and the topic that concerns me the most is the dramatic increase of tuition each year.
It has been posted in previous issues of the Daily Lobo that tuition is supposed to increase by 6.11 percent next year. To many students, this is a dramatic increase.
A tuition increase can sometimes be the one thing that stops a student from being able to afford college. Students are forced to choose between paying their bills or getting an education.
Each year, UNM receives money through state funding. However, if the University is not given enough money through these state funds to run on, the only solution anticipated is to increase tuition. Having other ways to make up for the money lost each year through state funding would be more beneficial to students.
UNM could use other methods such as fundraising or asking for donations to increase funding for the school. Of course, fundraising is not going to bring in as much money, but it will certainly help.

With the more money brought in there will be a decrease in tuition raises. As tuition decreases, more students will be able to attend UNM, making the classes fuller.
So I advise the regents to look at this issue very seriously. They need to find ways to make money other than by increasing tuition. If this action is met, more students will attend UNM, bringing in more money.
