Editor,
This week I received a memo from Bill Adkins, UNM's chief information officer, stating that UNM will not produce a hard copy campus directory starting this fall. The memo states that they "found a majority of faculty, staff and students are now using the online directory..."
I am saddened by this because if the Staff Council or the UNM Retiree Association had been polled, we would have mentioned all of the many uses we have for the directory besides names and numbers. It is the one-stop shop for UNM maps, Popejoy Hall events, for constituent groups on campus to list officers and contact info, and voice mail set-up. Then there is the cover art, which is usually done by a staff person and always worthy of a frame.
Another tradition bites the dust. I only hope that the UNM computer systems can take all the traffic, that the server will always be up 24 hours a day, seven days a week, that there is a public portal without having to log on, and that they at least make it so I can print off a copy for home.
