Letter: Academics should work on hunger, not weapons

Editor,

UNM will host a nuclear think-tank meeting at the SUB to promote weapons on Friday. This is incongruous with the fundamental role of a university in promoting peace and free thought.

People all over the world are sick and tired of science and technology being used for profiteering and conquest. At a time when the whole world is experiencing the threat of war, when hunger, illness, illiteracy and underdevelopment afflict the vast majority of the planet's inhabitants, the appropriate and responsible stance for an institution of the nation's intelligentsia would be to hold a meeting that addresses these problems instead.

People who are also concerned about the political independence of higher learning from the military-industrial complex and the proliferation of nuclear weapons should come to the think-tank meeting Friday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the SUB and voice these concerns.
