Editor,
I would like to commend Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, and Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, on their public defense of President Bush in the face of the hostility of the Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
Among other things, Chávez asserted that Bush was "the devil" at a speech addressing the United Nations. While both Rangel and Pelosi have been consistently critical of the Bush administration, they were able to set partisan politics aside when the time came. This is a very reassuring stand and is representative of why our country will remain intact behind a dedicated government.
It would have been very easy to feed off of Chávez's remarks and use them to exploit the administration's faltering reputation in the international community. In a time when there is endless controversy, both domestically and abroad, it is a long-overdue reminder that despite congressional bickering on the part of Republicans and Democrats over just about every hot-button issue, there are certain things that are held to a different standard.
