Letter: Protester had the courage to make noise for peace

Editor,

It is hard to remain calm in word or thought about the Robert Anderson arrest during the UNM-sponsored forum on mass murder and genocide. The true crime is the overwhelming drive to smother any and all objection to illegal and immoral nuclear proliferation, disguised under the basically ironic, yet diabolical, goal of killing for peace.

This is akin to the thought, "There's no one left alive, so it must be a draw." This is what we have become. Our space program has basically turned from exploration of the planets and stars to development of war-related gizmos. Most of the war in Iraq is being serviced by private enterprise - check out "Iraq for Sale" - thus, it has spread far and wide, and so has its corruption. War-factory domino operations exist all over the U.S., whereby one plant shutting down in Texas would disrupt 30 or so other states' plants.

The military budget has risen 40 percent since 2000, after already being larger than the military spending of the next 15 countries combined. Could you imagine what could have been done to New Orleans with half of the $325 billion already spent on this despicable war - a war that brings a 9/11 to innocent human beings every day, filled with terror, destruction and death. And UNM is holding a symposium on what the U.S. needs in order to become a stronger country in terms of nuclear weapons?

I applaud Anderson for his continuing quest for peace. You know, even that word peace is laughable in the climate of President George Bush's regime. A professor of old once announced, "Fish did not discover water." We have become more than blinded to our disgrace and shame. So I thank you, Anderson, for your conviction and courage. You voiced opposition to further U.S. development of illegal nuclear weapons, and for this, you were handcuffed and whisked away.

This is the post-9/11 world, and this is the new U.S. What else can be said?
