Letter: UNM not meant to serve those who profit from war

Editor,

I am a citizen of New Mexico, so UNM is my University. I am appalled that the war planners are using my University in my state to promote genocide.

I come from a long line of military people. My father was a B-17 pilot and firebombed Germany, and he came home and killed himself because he had participated in that horror. My grandson enlisted voluntarily to go to Iraq and support our country but came back feeling quite differently. He now says, "Keep on demonstrating. All we are doing is killing people and running up the budget. Maybe if more people speak up, they will pull the plug on this abortion."

I couldn't get off work the day that Robert Anderson was arrested. I am grateful that he was there speaking for me. If our University belongs to the people of New Mexico, we should all be represented when it holds an informational program on weapons.

Does our University belong to the war profiteers now? Is the University funded heavily from this source? Was the arrest of a patriotic American who spoke up really an attempt to shut up the opposition? It sure looks like that to me, if normal citizens aren't allowed to speak out at a public relations stunt promoting weapons and war profiteers.
