Editor,
There is no possible case for further research and development into nuclear weapons. Despite the blatant hypocrisy in the argument for more weapons, are we, as an institution of higher learning, going to let this stand?
The abuse of knowledge to create weapons of mass destruction that incinerate victims alive, not to mention the environmental degradation of nuclear waste and strip mining, is preposterous. What other types of government funding should the University blindly accept, just because it wants money?
Should the journalism department accept money to teach students how to plant stories in newspapers to influence public opinion, like in Iraq? Should the psychology department accept grants from the government to research new ways of torture that skirt the Geneva Conventions? Where does our silent compliance with government research start or end? We as an institution must speak out on the direction this University is headed if morals still exist.
