Editor,
Something to remember on this day honoring St. Valentine is that there are consequences to acts of love performed in the heat of the moment, where emotions overwhelm one's thoughts about anything outside of that instant.
Enjoy every aspect of the day - except its overcommercialization - but make sure to use protection. Not only does contraception protect from possible diseases, but it also protects from unwanted pregnancy, which places strain on both parties involved and on the world at large.
Population is a serious problem - Albuquerque is currently facing the issue of conserving the limited amount of available water and land, both of which are dwindling. Although residents of the city have been decreasing their use of water per capita, the number of residents is growing. This growth is especially due to the success of industries and businesses here, which also increases water use.
I have also noticed the relentless expansion of cookie-cutter houses on the West Side, reminding me of the resources it takes to provide for such development. This pattern is occurring around the nation and causing the resources of the Earth to be rapidly depleted. Fuel is added to the fire as populations and demands increase throughout the world.
Protect yourself and future generations by wrapping it up this holiday and every other intimate moment. There are many opportunities for prosperity that could be delayed or halted by an unwanted pregnancy or disease. I am not trying to discourage any fun to be had. I'm just hoping we can assure many more opportunities in the future.
