U.S. must take a hard line against Israel's occupation

Editor,

The media is ordinarily full of what seems to be justification for Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territory, which apparently is institutionalized terrorism, as in terrorism on a national level. It's good to be reminded by letters like the one by Vicki Johnson on Tuesday that Hisham Jabi's presentation in the SUB on March 24 was to inform people of what Palestinians are experiencing. These experiences are caused by Israel's long-term violations of international laws - laws to which Israel is signatory. I think it's vital that Americans are informed of this, because our own government appears to support Israel's illegal policies by not taking a hard line when it comes to enforcing accepted international laws.

Why is this so? The U.S. has taken a hard line about violations by other nations. I think, to a large extent, it's because the U.S. media is saturated with sympathy for the reverberations Israel experiences as the perpetrator of violence and generally ignores the myriad suffering that Israel's illegal policies are meant to create for the intended victims - Palestinians in occupied territory.

So, thank you for publishing Johnson's letter, which informs those who could not attend Jabi's lecture. It's good to know UNM is making an effort to present a very important perspective that so many are unaware of, because it is vital knowledge to the success of real peacemaking.
