Editor,
Friday's Daily Lobo contained an article about making UNM's Main Campus smoke-free. The article says that the regents want more input from students before they act on the proposal.
The Board of Regents is seeking this input from ASUNM. I would like to propose that the regents publish an e-mail address in the Daily Lobo so that students can give this feedback directly to them. I would prefer to have my voice heard directly rather than have it filtered through a student organization.
I have an allergy to tobacco smoke. Experiencing second-hand smoke as I walk between classes gives me sinus infections. As crowded as our walkways are between classes, I have nowhere to walk to avoid it. Also, on the rare times I can find a smoke-free outdoor area to eat my lunch, someone starts smoking there within five minutes of my sitting down. I get very tired of having to move my lunch in order to not get sick.
The issue of a smoking ban is about much more than personal choice. Personal choice stops being personal when it harms someone else. Regents, please move quickly to enact a campuswide smoking ban. Even if enforcement is an issue, just having the ban gives me credibility to ask others to refrain from smoking in my presence.
