Students can make impact on hunger in New Mexico

Editor,

For the past week, the Daily Lobo's Opinion pages have been focused primarily on the on-going debate between evolution and theories of creation. While this debate is certainly important, we believe space should be devoted to more pressing issues affecting our communities.

Every day, more than 238,000 New Mexicans seek food assistance. More than 13 percent of our state's population goes hungry every day. One out of six New Mexicans does not know where his or her next meal will

come from.

Recently, students in our Research Service-Learning classes have worked to raise awareness of the extent and pervasiveness of hunger in New Mexico. They have created a Web site,

Hungrylobo.com, which provides information on hunger in New Mexico as well as links to hunger resources. We would also like to encourage you to visit the site and click the link to a survey designed to assess the problem of hunger at UNM. Students have also planned Lobo Hunger Awareness Day on Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. outside Popejoy Hall.

While theoretical debates over science and religion continue, 20 percent of New Mexico's children are regularly missing meals. UNM has already recognized the significance of hunger and its impact on our state, and it is offering 18 Research Service-Learning classes this spring focused on the issue of hunger and what can be done about it.

In closing, we ask readers to take part in Lobo Hunger Awareness Day. They can also join our anti-hunger initiative by logging on to HungryLobo.com or calling RSLP at 277-3355 to learn more about our classes and how they can help stop hunger in New Mexico.
