Miners to search for gold with permission from U.S.

SILVER CITY (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service will allow owners of a mining claim southwest of Silver City to dig for minerals. Silver City District ranger Russell Ward says the owners of the claim, in Black Hawk Canyon in the northern part of the Burro Mountains, are looking for gold.

18 injured as boat collides with barge on Mississippi

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A boat carrying state prison employees collided with a barge on the swollen Mississippi River upstream from Baton Rouge on Sunday, injuring 18 people. The crewboat, with 20 people aboard, was taking workers who had just ended their shifts across the river.

Taliban kills 11 policemen at Afghanistan checkpoint

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Taliban militants attacked a group of police officers sleeping on the mud floor of an isolated roadside checkpoint early Monday in southern Afghanistan, killing 11 in the latest assault against the nation's vulnerable police force.
