Candidates vie for ASUNM top spots

Voting begins today for ASUNM elections.

Thirty-one students are running for positions in the Associated Students of UNM, including openings for president, vice president and 10 senatorial seats.

The organization will set up polls at nine locations across campus.

Unlike last year, students will not be able to vote online.

There are three slates in the race: Howl, Vision and Revolution.

Two senatorial candidates are running independently.

ASUNM President Ashley Fate is running for re-election on the Vision slate, which also includes a vice presidential candidate and 10 senatorial candidates.

"You try to run with a full slate for all the senatorial positions because that increases your chances of being able to get elected," she said.

Fate said Vision wants to make UNM a sustainable campus, make advisers more accessible to students and hold them accountable for the advice they give.

Fate said her slate will push for a new recreation center and try to get off-campus food vendors to accept Lobo Cash.

Sen. Adrian Carver is running for president, as well.

Carver said his slate, Howl, wants to implement an incentive program where students will get points for going to athletic events and trade them in for prizes.

Carver said his slate also wants to create an academy for leaders of student organizations.

"It would teach them how to get funding through UNM and different ways to get funding through the University," he said.

Student Ramona Teo is running for Senate on the Revolution slate.

Teo said the Revolution slate wants students to not be punished for downloading music, be free from having their English assignments red-flagged by professors that consider them to be a threat, and be free to have the ability to smoke where they want to.

"You have a right to do with your body as you choose," she said. "We want to be a voice for the students that are against the smoking ban."
