Vision takes majority of ASUNM positions

The Vision slate dominated the undergraduate elections Wednesday, according to unofficial results provided by the ASUNM Elections Commission.

The official results will be released today at 5 p.m.

Associated Students of UNM President Ashley Fate, of the Vision slate, said she was ecstatic to be re-elected. Fate won with 740 votes out of 1,235 ballots cast.

However, Fate said she was disappointed her vice presidential candidate, Sen. Joey Dworak, had not been as lucky.

"We went into this all for one and one for all - that's been our motto since day one," Fate said. "We didn't campaign for ourselves; we campaigned for every other person on our slate. I mean, because how are you going to feel when you look across the room and there's that one person who didn't make it? And that's kind of what happened tonight."

Sen. Alex Riebli, of the Howl slate, was the only non-Vision candidate elected. He won the vice presidential election, carrying 634 votes out of 1,197 cast.

Riebli said he looked forward to take implementing some of the ideas the Howl slate campaigned for.

The athletics point system - designed to drive students to athletic events - is at the top of his list, he said.

"If we want to sell UNM or market UNM, athletic sports are kind of the front door," he said. "That's the front porch of the institution. That's what a lot people see on ESPN, and that's what a lot of people see and read about in the newspaper."

Fate said she would be glad to work with Riebli on instituting the system at UNM.

Candidate Eric McInteer said the elections process is flawed.

"If you get on the right slate, you're almost guaranteed a seat," he said.

McInteer campaigned on the Howl slate and was not elected to the Senate.

"As far as these elections go, I think that the process should be geared more towards the quality of each individual, because right now whoever has the stronger presidential candidate is going to have this massive coattail effect," he said.

Vision candidate David Conway said that the elections were based on each candidate's strength. That's why Riebli was elected vice president, he said.

"I don't think it's much about the slate," he said. "I think it's a lot about the ideas and the goals that you have."

All 10 open senatorial seats went to the Vision slate.

The new senators are: Ivan Miller, Jolonzo Goldtooth, Arielle Bernier, Gayle Tripp, Shauna Tuite, Michael Westervelt, David Conway, Chris George, Jes Martin and Mario Hernandez-Gerety.

Spencer Moya and Haylee Nelson, of the Howl slate, were elected to half-term positions in the ASUNM Senate and will take over for two senators graduating in December.
