Business event stresses importance of ethics

UNM business students gathered Saturday to compete in the first Anderson Club Challenge.

Anderson students competed in four marketing events: strategic, sales, mission statement and sales pitch.

"We want to get students involved and let everyone know they are welcome," said Patrick Greenough, president of UNM's chapter of the American Marketing Association.

Two groups faced off in the challenge: Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business organization; and Net Impact, which focuses on sustainable ethics in business.

Faculty from the Anderson School of Management attended the event to show their support.

"These challenges give students ownership of their skills with business, and they become a lot more involved in extracurricular activities," professor Jeanne Logsdon said.

Lucie Wang said she is involved in several clubs and recommended everyone join at least one.

"This competition is a great way for students to show you shouldn't just come to class; you should really venture out and get involved with any extracurricular activity," she said. "We definitely want students to feel like there is a center for them where you can hang out and have a great time."

Wang said Saturday's competition also gave students valuable business experience.

For the marketing event, the groups made up slogans and acted out the advertisement they designed.

Wang said each event emphasized ethics, which is becoming more important in the business world today as the demand for environmentally friendly companies grows.

"All of the students incorporated ethics in their groups today," Wang said. "Business looks to the three-P system for success in society: profit, people and the planet."

She said Anderson graduates will need to think ethically to succeed in the future.

"Especially now for a business to thrive, these are some of the key things a business would want to pay attention to," Wang said.

Greenough said the Anderson Club Challenge is a great way for business students to get firsthand knowledge of marketing skills, and it is open to undergraduates, as well.

"Hopefully this will be something we can continue," Greenough said. "It's a great way to learn advertisement business, and it doesn't just have to be about you being a business major. Everyone is welcomed."
