UNM group condemns (un)Occupy at teach-in

UNM’s Conservative Republican group held its own teach-in in the SUB Tuesday in opposition to the (un)Occupy Albuquerque movement. The (un)Occupy Albuquerque movement, part of the larger Occupy Wall Street movement, has occupied UNM’s attention for the past five weeks.

Website pinpoints free parking

UNM student Seth Gilpin was fed up with trying to find and pay for parking on main campus, so he created freecollegeparking.com As the name suggests, the site helps students find free parking spots in the UNM area.

Hodgin Hall re-opens, time capsule unearthed

UNM parking officials enforced penalties in 1908, the same way they do 2011. A century-old parking ticket was one of the items discovered inside a time capsule buried at Hodgin Hall in 1908 and opened Wednesday night at the alumni building’s grand re-opening.

Mascots rally against pricey textbooks

Textbook Rebellion, a national movement to lower textbook prices, visited UNM Tuesday with its mascots, Mr. $200 Textbook and the Textbook Rebel. UNM’s chapter of New Mexico Public Interest Research Group sponsored the event to gather petition signatures and get students interested in ways to lower textbook prices.

Dorms to get fire alarm upgrade

Fire alarms in many dorm rooms on campus will be updated to include louder sirens and a system to pinpoint where a fire is located. Walt Miller, vice president for Student Life, said Santa Ana Hall and Santa Clara Hall are being upgraded this semester. The two-building project this semester cost $250,000.

Undergraduate student regent looks to focus on cooperation

Student regents get to sit at the table with government-appointed, middle-aged businesspeople and take part in million-dollar decisions that affect the future of UNM. This year, Cate Wisdom will be the first undergraduate to take the student regent seat, and she intends to make the most of it.

UNM Law School searches for dean

UNM's School of Law is looking to hire a dean this semester. Four finalists will interview for the position on campus this month and next. Provost Suzanne Ortega is heading the search committee, and Deputy Provost Richard Holder said a decision should be announced around March, two to four weeks after the interviews are finished.
