Editor,
I feel compelled to respond to Jeffrey Harrisman's sweeping indictment of baby boomers. Perhaps Harrisman is not aware that there are plenty of us boomers on staff who are not especially tickled to be told we won't get a raise this year, that our departments cannot purchase needed equipment or supplies or to watch apparent cronyism siphon off those funds that could be used for purposes we consider much more worthy than another VP or repairs and upgrades to the stadium or golf course.
Perhaps Harrisman is not aware that many of us voted for Barack Obama, Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and that we sincerely and genuinely want to see some much-needed changes in our communities as well as in our country.
Perhaps Harrisman is not aware that in our younger days, many of us put ourselves on the line in marches and volunteer work for many causes, including civil rights, equal rights for women, against the Vietnam War. Perhaps Harrisman is not aware that we have not forgotten about those days or stopped caring about those causes just because we now have families and good jobs.
It is usually a mistake to make sweeping generalizations about any large group of people, and the baby boomers are no exception. Maybe some of us are " ... just a bunch of corrupt, mean, old people...." But I don't know anyone like that. I know a lot of people who are concerned about many things, from, "What kind of world we are bequeathing to our children and grandchildren?" to, "How are we going to pay the rent or mortgage?" or, "Can we ever afford to really retire?"
Perhaps Harrisman could get to know some of us as people before he condemns all of us for the sins of a few.
