Editor,
Although UNM is on winter break, I would like the Daily Lobo to objectively cover the humanitarian crisis that is taking place in Gaza.
Israeli air strikes and ground invasions in Gaza have brutally killed more than 600 individuals, and the numbers are rising. The situation has become an outright massacre due to disproportionate amount of military force. The deaths in Gaza are clearly a violation of international law and show total disregard toward the sanctity of human life. The Israeli forces went so far as to bomb a United Nations school where children were seeking shelter. There is no excuse for such brutality.
Now reporters are denied entry into Gaza to prevent news coverage. The situation in Gaza unfortunately is a continuation of a humanitarian crisis following months of a crippling blockade where basic food supplies in Gaza are running low and hospitals are struggling to cope with the rising casualties. According to Oxfam, only 137 trucks of food were allowed into Gaza last month to feed the whole Gazan population. The United Nations reports that poverty has reached an "unprecedented level." More recently, the International Committee of the Red Cross stated there is a "full-blown humanitarian crisis" in Gaza.
I urge the Daily Lobo to cover news in Gaza, and for UNM students of conscience and justice to contact their representatives to ask for a condemnation of Israeli aggression and condemn the misuse of American tax dollars to provide weapons to the Israeli government that enables the killing of innocent human beings in Gaza.
