Schmidly must be replaced by a new, trustworthy leader

Editor,

Students, faculty and staff of UNM, there has clearly been a lot of anti-Schmidly Administration sentiment expressed in letters to the editor. I think it's time we did something about it. For those who want to put an end to the Schmidly Administration, go to PetitionOnline.com/schmidly/petition.html so we can let UNM know we demand new leadership. It was clear we did not get the answers we wanted from the forum last semester. Schmidly gave excuses to try to get around all of our critical questions.

This is what we want to know: Why do the departments of Mathematics and Chemistry not have the faculty they need to provide us with the education we deserve and pay for? Why does the Department of Psychology not have an adviser? Why is there a hiring freeze for needed faculty when it only took a couple days to find a new football coach? Why do we have all of these vice presidents? What is with these outrageous salaries for administrators? Why can we not pay our faculty a fair wage?

For those cynics out there who do not believe an online petition will change anything, I would like to remind you that this has worked at other universities. This is a public institution. These administrators are responsible to us as students and as taxpayers. If they do not do as we wish, then it is our obligation to replace them with people who will. Schmidly said, "High morale starts with trust and communication." We do not trust him, and this is us communicating: Step aside and let us choose a president who has our interests in mind.
