Editor,
Even though I wasn't surprised, my jaw still dropped when I saw how much UNM is forking out for a football coach: $750,000 a year. All the while, our professors are struggling to keep their heads above water with the freezes on hiring, the standstill on raises and the overload of work on poorly staffed departments.
It's a hard pill to swallow, but the University continues to show athletics is more important than academics. I think we all notice the carefree attendance policies given to athletes, The Pit's expensive facelift and many other things.
I'm not sure what message is trying to be conveyed here. Let's rebuild The Pit while our classrooms fall apart at the seams? Let's overpay all the wrong people in hopes of saving lifeless programs? Let's see how far we can push our professors before they say enough is enough?
If this is kept up, UNM will be filled with overpaid coaches, a naive president, rotting buildings and few athletes. If you care about the rest of us, please stop and reconsider your decisions before it's too late to even pay us off.
