Editor,
I've juggled academics and my professional life for 25 years now and, for better or worse, consider UNM to be my final resting place where I hope to finish a graduate degree this decade. Over those years, I've seen all the complaints and responses one could ever hope to see regarding the lack of communication between the undergraduate and graduate student bodies, their elected leaders, faculty and the administration with none of them ever actually making a meaningful move to change the situation. It is always easier to complain about things than do something about them. I would like to propose the following as an open invitation to the newly elected ASUNM and GPSA officers, the Faculty Senate, President David Schmidly's office and the Daily Lobo:
How about dedicating a daily page (or two) of the Lobo to the governing affairs of the University. Schmidly could do his weekly address there, and folks might actually read it instead of deleting it from their in-box. The student groups could have regular columns covering whatever topics are relevant to them. The faculty and staff organizations could put in their two cents, and maybe the Daily Lobo could have an assigned political correspondent to fill in whatever space is left on the page for UNM-related political issues.
This way, all interested parties can get information out in a readily accessible and expeditious manner, and the general population of the University might actually begin to pay more attention to the activities of those parties. In theory, this could greatly reduce the amount of griping that occurs on campus, and we could all get back to the job at hand: inspiring students to become better human beings.
How about it everyone?
