Environmental groups, Schrader not approaching issues correctly

Editor,

Recently, a member from an environmental group standing near the SUB casually asked me, "Do you have a minute for the Earth?" I politely told her "No." Perhaps I should have told her I use a water-saving showerhead; I ride the city buses very often; I do all my laundry only once per week including my bed sheets; and I carpool very often.

I am well-aware that we have to take care of our planet for ourselves and for future generations, so I don't need to be giving these environmental groups a monthly donation just so that they can increase environmental awareness.

Furthermore, it bothers me every time that Don Schrader preaches his gospel of environmentalism on this publication. I believe that secondhand smoke from a cigarette is more deadly than automobile exhaust. Hundreds of thousands of people have died from cigarettes because cigarette smoke contains cyanide - same as in rat poison - among other deadly chemicals. How many people have died from carbon monoxide emissions? Why doesn't Schrader ever mention anything about smoking? According to the American Cancer Society, cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs combined. He claims that it's selfish to drive a car, but a vehicle is an absolute need for many people.

If you are someone who has several young children, how will you transport them from one place to another? On a bicycle?
