What do you think UNM should do to reduce energy consumption on campus?

"I don't understand why all of New Mexico isn't solar powered. There's so much sun here all the time that I always felt that it was ridiculous for us not to use such a prevalent natural resource. That would do wonders for our campus. I think it could cut tuition; it would be more environmentally friendly. You know, personally, I think it's really exciting to see UNM-Taos completely solar and hope they set a precedent for the rest of New Mexico, especially on the UNM campuses.

"Energy consumption is very important now-a-days, and, now that I know that UNM-Taos has switched to solar power energy, I truly believe that UNM should try to do the same thing, at least in some of the buildings, because right now the University is very, very big. I know that we have recycling programs that are very efficient, but we should definitely work on some more recycling bins and keep people informed, since that's basically where all the change starts. And maybe have some solar panels in here and get people to know about them.

"I think that my biggest concern is the air conditioning. So for some rooms of the buildings, you don't need air conditioning because there is no class there. UNM uses central control so every classroom will be provided with air conditioning, which is not necessary. That is a huge energy waste. Also some buildings have the central air conditioning service which I guess is not necessary if you don't have a sub-system which can control the air conditioning of each room better. I don't know whether that will increase cost, but that would be a better form of reducing electrical energy.

"I think we should, as students, become more involved in the recycling effort. A lot of us don't really take it into consideration completely. It's like 'Oh yeah, it's a good thing' but then I see people throwing plastic bottles into the trash and stuff like that. I think we should build a solar energy field like (UNM-Taos) and install panels and stuff. You know, spend money where it should be spent instead of renovating the Pit. And, I don't know, go outside for class sometimes instead of being in the classroom with the lights on and watching the big screen or whatever.
