The Weekly Free

All the freedom of winter break is slipping through your fingers, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Sorry. Relish the last free moments before school starts with this week’s freebies.

PHONE BOOK RECYCLING
MONDAY
Google made phone books extinct a long time ago. I don’t know why the city even puts in the effort of printing them anymore. So if you have stacks of unused phone books but don’t want to waste paper, recycle them so they can be made into newer, updated phone books. The books can be dropped off anytime from Jan. 7 to March 1 at the Solid Waste Management Department at 4600 Edith Blvd. N.E.

KARAOKE
MONDAY
It’s free to embarrass yourself in front of the patrons of Blackbird Buvette … who knew. You might want some liquid courage, so pregame at home unless you want to spend $7 per drink. Karaoke starts at 9 p.m. every Monday at 509 Central Ave. N.W.

SACRED WATER
TUESDAY
Learn the nuances of sacred rituals and practices, and maybe you’ll even get to make some sacred water. Everyone needs sacred water once in a while — it has more electrolytes than earthling water. The event starts at 7 p.m. at Bookworks at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. N.W.

DOWNTON ABBY TEA
WEDNESDAY
PBS’ historical drama “Downton Abby” entered its third season on Sunday, so apparently Americans like it — I have no idea why. Period costumes and language have never got me going, but if you love history as much as you love tea, then you’re in luck. The Taylor Ranch Library at 5700 Bogart St. N.W. hosts a Downton Abby-style tea tasting, at which participants will learn about the history of tea and proper etiquette. The event starts at 10:30 a.m., and you must register at libevents.cabq.gov before attending. Bring a china or glass cup. No paper cups are allowed.

WATERSHIP DOWN
SATURDAY
This classic novel is probably more interesting as a movie — but that’s for you to find out. “Watership Down” is like the “Aeneid,” except every character is a rabbit. The Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Libraries have organized “Books to the Big Screen,” a series of screenings held across Albuquerque through the end of January. The film is at 12:30 p.m. at the Guild Cinema at 3405 Central Ave. N.E. “Charlotte’s Web” is playing the same day at 2 p.m. at the South Broadway Cultural Center’s John Lewis Theater at 1025 Broadway Blvd. S.E.

TREES, ROCKS AND DIRT
SATURDAY
It’s more than just trees, rocks and dirt — that’s just the title of an art exhibition put on by art students from Volcano Vista High School. The art is supposed to express the relationship these artists have to outdoor sights such as the Petroglyph National Monument, views of the west mesa and the bosque. The event runs from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Open Space Visitor Center at 6500 Coors Blvd. N.W.
